ROUGH JUSTICE by Terence Frisby

OUTLINE AND CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS

A tense courtroom drama, Rough Justice features the accused, James Highwood, a showbiz personality, defending himself on a charge of killing his severely disabled baby son. Prosecuting him is Margaret Casely, QC, a well respected, fair minded Catholic pro-lifer. Supporting Highwood is Jeremy Ackroyd a solicitor whose duty is to keep his explosive client on track, and Highwood's wife Jean whose dark secret is gradually revealed...

The play is clearly set in the old Bailey's Central Criminal Court, London and therefore a suggestion of English “accent” will be expected.

James Highwood: arrogant, self confident and a TV talk show host who will suffer a profound emotional breakdown during the action of the play – an acting challenge. Late 20's – early 40's.

Jean Highwood: his wife, outwardly composed yet holding that dark secret and under great stress as she watches the trial. Late 20's – early 40's.

Margaret Casely, QC: the prosecuting counsel; must balance her personal beliefs with the business and fairness of the law while suffering a barrage of provocation from Highwood. Early to late middle age.

Jeremy Ackroyd: Highwood's solicitor, balanced, fair and measured and, like all the others, struggling with the outrageous behaviour of his client. Early – late middle age.

Judge: An elder statesman type; a high court judge in the Old Bailey so must have maturity and wisdom, balancing tolerance with strict discipline. Mid – late middle age.

PC Ramsden, policeman witness

Dr Simon Kerr, pathologist witness

Dr Hannah Radzinski, paediatrician witness

The above three witness roles are small but full of import and all with potential for good character work; professional types, various ages.

We will also require of couple of walk-on court officers.
